Physical Characteristics. Hendry County is east of Ft. Myers and south of Lake Okeechobee and is bordered by Glades, Lee, Collier, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The county has 1162.52 square miles of land and 27.70 square miles of water for a total of 1190.22 square miles. The average January temperature is 64.0 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average August temperature is 81.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 49.95 inches. History. Hendry County was established in 1923 from a portion of Lee County and named for Captain Francis Ashbury Hendry, an early settler in the area and known as "the cattle king of South Florida."
